The Annual Burrowing Owl Festival is Back!

Feb 03, 2025 08:00AM ● By Ann Marie O’Phelan

They make whoots, whistles, and coos, and you might hear them before you spot a gathering of little burrowing owls atop a mailbox, on fence posts, or on a white T-perch. Weighing only 5-8.5 ounces and standing 7.5-11 inches tall, they are one of the smallest owl species on the planet. Cape Coral has the largest population of burrowing owls in the state, with over 1,000 nesting pairs. It’s hard not to fall in love with them at first sight.

Those who love burrowing owls and those who would love to learn more about them should check out the 23rd Annual Burrowing Owl Festival/ Wildlife & Environmental Expo that takes place on Saturday, February 22, 2025, 10 am-4 pm, at Rotary Park in Cape Coral. This is largest wildlife festival in the area, and was created to educate people about burrowing owls, wildlife, and environmental concerns in Southwest Florida that have been impacted by development and climate change.

“The event includes live animals from Adam’s Animal Encounters, a Children’s Corner with crafts, educational activities, and face painting, wildlife experts, a silent auction, guided bus tours around Cape Coral to observe wildlife, tours of the Tom Allen Butterfly House, arts & crafts vendors, exhibits of wildlife and conservation organizations, food & beverages, and more,” says Janet Windisch, Corresponding Secretary, Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife (CCFW). There’s also a four-hour photography bus tour that Master Bird Guides host. Advance registration is required. Find out more at Bird Tour

“New this year is that the Conservancy of Southwest Florida will bring their mobile classroom, packed with hands-on science exhibits that bring nature to life,” adds Windisch.

The CCFW is looking for sponsorships, auction items, and promotional or giveaway items for the 2025 festival. “We want to make this year the best one yet,” says Windisch. All funds raised go toward helping the wildlife of Cape Coral. Find out more at CCFW

If you can’t make the event, e-donations are always helpful to the cause and appreciated by CCFW, a 501-C-3 volunteer organization that preserves local wildlife and educates the community. Find out how you can help at Support CCFW
